Hannover - Germany 1981 - Enola Gay

Punk rockers congregate at Hannovers Kornstrasse and Glocksee venues. The scene, young kids and teenagers bored with a life conforming to the commercial music shit churned at them on a daily basis and social structures within society leaving no room to generate new ideas and pursue new concepts which could lead to an improved life and safer future. Living in a society claiming to be democratic and tolerant, whilst simultaneously denying the existence of minorities and groups who possess their own peaceful vision of a life beyond the boundries of exploitation, persecution, fear and conflict. A society blindly accepting and approving to the systems war machinery which posed and still poses a permanent threat to blast mankind into extinction and multi national corporations, exploiting resources and labour, inflicting poverty and despair to millions of human beings throughout the globe - This could never be an acceptable solution and had to be opposed.

Enola Gay emerged out of the necessity to voice protest against those who threatened mankind and nature. The band streamlined to focus on critical issues i.e. nuclear weapons stockpiles, nuclear power, human and animal rights, American and Russian military intervention in poverty states, corporate exploitation, the malfunction of a paradox society, state control and oppression .....and a never ending list of attrocities and abusive practicalities upon innocent victims. As the band became more involved in political and social issues, more positive response and support became evident from individuals and groups with similar ideas around Germany and several other European countries.

Enola Gay band members never claimed to have an entirely adherent outlook on life in the way of how to achieve the aims they proclaimed. However, being close friends and having a good understanding among each other, common ground and compromises could easily be found and made. Enola Gay strived and struggled for a better and safer world - and change could only derive from the actions of oneself. One crucial issue related to this was animal rights - although the band respected the views and opinions of other punk bands in the Hannover scene, some found it redundant or uncomfortable to relate their music or sympathize with animal rights and peace demonstrations. The same people who were respected hauled out to harass and disparage Enola Gay performances, gigs and band work wherever possible. This revealed a maladroit and disregardful approach to issues clearly requiring more serious attention and active debate at the time.

Enola Gay formed the first punk animal rights group in Hannover in 1983 and held regular information events and demonstrations among other related activities together with local animal rights activists. The band played a decisive role distributing concise information to the public, thus unveiling facts the chemical and pharmacy industry denied. The torture and harassment of innocent and defenceless creatures for corporate profit and medical requirements was unacceptable, unreasoned and could easily be replaced by alternative methods - avoiding the massacre and painful death of thousands of animals.

Malicious minds in governments and corporations had a tight grip on their societies, armies and industries, who were entitled and had the legitimacy to exploit and annihilate opposition if required. But peaceful resistance was growing at the same pace as the warlords were preparing for their final countdown. During the early eighties, more and more people had recognized the deceptive and selfish implementation of military mechanisms imposed by governments and decided it was time to take to the streets. Tens of thousands of protestors roamed the streets of towns and cities throughout Europe voicing their fear and discontent towards governments and arms manufacturers - the nuclear threat was real and almost inevitable - but the protests showed actions spoke louder than words - at least as long as the protests and resistance persevered. Believing that peaceful protest and debate could lead to real change was a distinct and firm fundament of the bands mentality and character. Punk rock was the common joy factor deeply embedded in the hearts and minds of the band, but the constant and imminent threat of political and corporate decision makers was the key component to continue the struggle for peace, equality and real liberty.

Enola Gay inspired and influenced many anti-war bands during the eighties and enjoyed years of touring and playing with honest and amiable people from many nations and walks of life. The only material available was produced independently on their own Label - Enola Records or together with Double A Rec. in Hannover - Germany.
